...I wonder if these mushrooms are to be eaten. I think Mario and Co merely somewhat "use" their power without actually consuming the mushroom.

Definitely my favorite power-up in the mario series. It's the easiest to use out of all flying powerups. I do get quite steamed when I lose it.
